She Has/ They Have Bipolar Disorder

Singer, songwriter, and actress Demi Lovato is only 33 years old, but the  “personal life” section of her Wikipedia page is lengthy. Though she had long been a supporter of the LGBTQAI+ community, Lovato dated a long string of male celebrities.

But then Lovato began calling herself “pansexual,” “sexually fluid,” and soon after “non-binary.” They adopted the pronouns they/them. She has since reinstated her she/her pronouns after starting to feel more feminine again. However, she’s still perfectly fine with they/them. I could devote a whole blog post to Lovato’s sexuality. But I won’t.

Lovato perhaps had bipolar disorder early, as a teenager, and that may have had a lot to do with her troubled early life. Lovato claims that her father could be abusive and suffered from mental illness. Lovato has received many honors and accolades for her talents. All in the midst of struggles with bulimia, self-harm, and cocaine use. Her substance abuse began in her early teens. She believes that being raped at age 15 led to these problems.

Lovato admitted to near overdoses and substance abuse affecting her performances. She became “California sober” by limiting herself to moderate alcohol and marijuana use before she realized that she had to become totally sober. As she looks back on her early life, Lovato wonders if she had ADHD instead of bipolar disorder.

After remaining sober for a few years, Lovato relapsed in 2018, resulting in an opioid overdose. Complications included a heart attack and several strokes. These days, Lovato is doing what she can to help others with mental illness, particularly children. Through her Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program, she has covered the treatment costs for many mental illness victims.

Lovato champions many causes through many activities, including anti-bullying, gun control, racial issues, feminism, environmentalism. and animal welfare. The beautiful singer and actress has a lot to offer, in her field and in the realm of activism.
